What is MYP LANGUAGE ACQUISITION?Learning how to speak a new language can be daunting for anyone, child, adult or teen. Rest assured that any MYP Language Acquisition course offered in IB World schools is designed with both new learners and the accomplished linguist in mind. No matter the level of proficiency, there is a place for you within the programme. The IBO believes that, “an overarching aim of teaching and learning languages is to enable the student to become a critical and competent communicator.1” The content of the course is very practical, allowing students chances to use their new language skills in authentic settings. Students are encouraged to interact in real-world situations and are exposed to as many texts and cultural elements as possible. We study French music, look at various newspaper articles, blogs, websites and literature from around the French world. The Middle Years Programme encourages schools to provide continuous language learning in a given language over the course of the programme. This allows students to reach a high level of comfort within 5 years. Those who continue with the same language in the Diploma Programme are able to function at quite a sophisticated level. It has been proven that students who learn another language have a better understanding of their first language, are more culturally aware, and more confident in approaching people from different parts of the world. 1 IBO MYP Language B guide, pg. 7.
